A Note to Parents
Dear Parents,
I have raised my family and practiced medicine in the college town of Athens,Georgia since 2004.
Both of my boys were students at UGA. As my children and their peers left home for college, I realized just how confusing it can be for students to navigate their way through the healthcare maze.
As a physician in a college town, i often get phone calls from anxious parents who just do not know where to turn. Unfortunately, it is often after the student has spent days sick in a dorm room or ended up in the Emergency Room or at Urgent Care with an otherwise avoidable outrageous bill.
Watching my own children in college, it became even more apparent of the gap between the health treatment that they need and the limited care that can be provided through the current system. It was difficult for both of them to navigate both the University health system and emergency care. These frustrations led to the founding of Higher Ed Med – a superior and trusted alternative for college students.
I hope to earn the trust of you as a fellow parent in taking care of your children, just as I would take care of my own.

Why Traditional Student Healthcare In Athens Falls Short
UGA Health Center Booking Backlogs
During peak semester periods—rush week, midterms, and winter viral surges—campus clinic appointments can be booked out days in advance. Sick students need care today, not next Monday.
Off-Campus Urgent Care Unknowns
Walking into commercial urgent cares across Clarke County often leads to hours sitting among sick patients, unfamiliar rotating providers, rushed 5-minute visits, and unexpected out-of-network bills.
Busy Atlanta Parents Left In The Dark
Because students are legal adults under HIPAA, walk-in clinics will not communicate with parents. Higher Ed Med integrates parental communication into our care protocol from day one.
